UNDERSTANDING SYMBOLS

A symbol is an arbitrary or a conventional sign that represents something else...a concept, an idea, a quantity, anything one wishes. Recognition of symbols can occur both consciously and unconsciously. One of my favorite books on the subject- Dictionary of Symbols by Jack Tresidder- explores how every traditional symbol bears an elemental power that transcends boundaries and holds significance for many cultures. It asks questions such as: How did a symbol such as the cross, which today is so closely associated with Christianity, come to appear in the pre-Columbian art of Central America?

Symbol Dictionary Yes it really is a graphics dictionary. So, learning the search ropes is a little trickier than for a word dictionary. Some intellectual exercise and you'll find a detailed meaning and history of those strange symbols you saw in a dream last night or in the DaVinci Code. The site contains more than 1,600 articles covering 2,500 Western signs, arranged into 54 groups according to their graphic characteristics.
